From a September 1977 newspaper article:

Western Suburbs stun RFC as area rugby play starts

The fall 1977 Rugby Season began last Saturday for the Reston-based Western Suburbs Rugby - Football Club (WSRFC). Facing a stronger and more experienced Washington RFC, the Suburbs surprised all by defeating Washington on their home field, 3-0.

Washington's opening kick-off was taken by Patrick Cunningham on the Suburbs own 24 yard line and returned to about midfield where he was met by a host of Washington tacklers. Forming the "ruck" the ball was given to Larry Bertram who completed a perfect pass to fly-half Chris Callan advancing the ball well into Washington territory. The opening play set the pace for the af ternoon's game which saw a very aggressive WSRFC take advantage of costly Washington mistakes, including the penalty which set up Larry Self's 35 yard field goal which turned out to be the only score of the day.

Utilizing the speed of a young backfield, Suburbs continued to apply offensive pressure and spent a good part of the game inside the Washington 30 yard line. However, due to lack of size in the Suburbs forwards (linemen), they were unable to take much advantage of their numerous scoring opportunities.

One bright spot of the day for the forwards came late in the second half when they dominated four consecutive loose-rucks, exhibiting not only their stamina but their determination against an overpowering Washington side.

The WSRFC is open to all who would like to play or participate in the Club's various activities. WSRFC plays its first home game on Sept. 24 against Georgetown University at Baron Cameron Park. For further information concerning the Club call Chris Callan, 430- 7789 or Patrick Cunningham, 471-1487.

For the unacquainted, Rugby is the forerunner of American football. It's played on a field 120 yards long by 75 yards wide for ao non-stop minutes by two 15 player teams. The ball, which resembles an over-inflated football, is advanced by running, kicking or lateral passing until the ball is turned over by error or the player with the ball is tackled. Blocking is not allowed and protective padding is prohibited. Scoring is accomplished by placing the 'ball down (thus the American term "touchdown") in the opposition's end zone or by kicking the ball through the goal posts for a field goal.

Schedules and match results from before Fall 1977 are not available. (Note: Fall 1976 was WSRFC's first season.)
